Featured BoC Approved Provider
In each issue of Cert Update, the BOC recognizes a BOC Approved Provider for
notable efforts to enhance its CE programs for ATs. Featured organizations follow the
guidelines in the BOC Approved Provider Handbook and comply with the Standards
for BOC Approved Providers, a set of requirements implemented in 2016. This
issue’s featured BOC Approved Provider is Human Kinetics. We asked Michelle
Grindley, Continuing Education Manager, to comment on how the company adapted its
procedures to comply with the BOC Standards. Excerpts are below.
How has the enhanced Standards for BOC Approved
Providers impacted your program development and
administrative processes to offer CE for ATs?
Our course development process is more streamlined and
we’re able to share the BOC Standards as well as our
continuing education handbook throughout our organization.
Before, a few members of our team felt comfortable
making content recommendations for possible BOC CE
course material, but now we’re able to expand the base of
knowledge and different people can recognize content that’s
appropriate for the BOC.
What challenges and hurdles did your organization
overcome to comply with the Standards?
In getting prepared to meet the new requirements, we had
to review all of our courses, and in some cases, had to retire
courses that were no longer suitable because of the new
Standards. This process was time consuming and at points,
painful. It took a lot longer than we thought it would.
We also had to re-examine all of our CE awards and in some
cases lower the BOC awards for particular courses. This
was unfortunate for our customers, and we did our best to
work with them and exchange older courses for newer ones
with higher values when possible. This was a hurdle that felt
really uncomfortable, but most of our customers took the
news well and were just glad that we communicated with
them before they took the course.
Once the review process was complete, it was reassuring
to know that all of our courses could be delivered with
confidence and that we had really been thorough with our
review. Sometimes when new employees transition into a
role, they are not given the reasoning for certain procedures
and then start developing different procedures. This process
helped us make sure that all of our courses were at the
required level for BOC CE. Now we have a strong, very
complete process in place, which will help us ensure the
level and quality of our courses regardless of who is in what
role in our organization.
Do you believe the Standards have increased the
continuity, quality and outcomes of your education
Yes! We had decent processes in place before, but the
combination of auditing all of our courses and now having a
process that doesn’t have any holes in it really makes us feel
more confident that our CE courses will be consistent across
the board, regardless of what division or staff is working on
any particular product.
Our course objectives are focused on specific outcomes,
and we are regularly analyzing course exams and evaluations
to ensure that these outcomes are being met. We know that
our courses are at the appropriate level to be considered
continuing education, and the Standards and our process
help us to ensure that will be the case going forward. I spoke
a little to this above, but the biggest thing that the new
Standards have done for us is to ensure that regardless of
who is in what role in our organization, we have a process to
follow. Because of that, the quality and continuity of Human
Kinetics’ programs will remain consistent.
