BOC Election Results
Susan McGowen, PhD, LAT, ATC,
EMT, is the BOC’s newest Athletic
Trainer Director-Elect. Susan’s term
will begin immediately following
the July 2010 board meeting, and
she will replace outgoing Athletic
Trainer Director Bernadette Olson,
EdD, ATC.
Susan, a BOC Certified Athletic
Trainer since 1988, resides in
Albuquerque, New Mexico with
her Belgian Tervuren dogs, Yogi
and Sonic. She is the Athletic
Training Education Program
Coordinator for the University of
New Mexico (UNM) and President
of XMED, Inc. Additionally, she
works as Director of Sports
Medicine for ESPN, Inc. and Risk
Manager/Medical Consultant for
Red Bull North America, Inc. Susan
also serves as an item writer for the
BOC exam.
Susan McGowen
Susan earned her Bachelor of
Science degree in physical
education from Indiana University
in 1983, and she obtained her
Master of Science degree in physical
education from Syracuse University
in 1988. In 2002, she completed her
Doctor of Philosophy degree in
sports administration at UNM.
In response to the election results,
Susan said: “I am very excited and
honored to be a part of the Board
Fall 2009
of Directors and serve my fellow
Certified Athletic Trainers. I am
eager to get started and continue
enhancing the communication
between ATs, students and the
organizing bodies. This is an
exciting time in health care, and
ATs can lead the way.”

Director, says: “We are pleased to
welcome Susan to the BOC. Her
experience with ESPN and the X
Games will provide a perspective
not currently represented on the
Board of Directors.”
